FRANK

Net als in de eerste twee delen van haar trilogie, JEZEBEL en D̶A̶R̶K̶MATTER, gebruikt Menzo in het derde en laatste deel FRANK, the monstrous and horror, the 3rd part of a speculative fabulated trilogy vervorming en transformatie als stijlkenmerken. 

Menzo vertelt geen chronologische verhalen; ze creëert ruimtes en werelden waarin het Zwarte lichaam centraal staat en waarin verhalen van de Afrikaanse diaspora worden verkend. In de soloperformance JEZEBEL deconstrueerde ze het imago van de vrouw in de hiphopcultuur. In D̶A̶R̶K̶MATTER zocht ze naar manieren om het lichaam zoveel mogelijk los te zingen van de werkelijkheid, waarbij ze zich liet inspireren door donkere materie en zwarte gaten die botsen.

In FRANK – dat zowel verwijst naar het Engelse woord voor ‘eerlijk, oprecht’ als naar het Monster van Frankenstein – gaat Menzo op zoek naar het monster in alle mogelijke gedaanten, maar vooral als een gedeelde fantasie: de onmens, de afwijking van het normale, de ander. Zombies, demonen, spoken, gevaarlijke dieren: ze weerspiegelen de angst voor het onbekende. FRANK is een voorstelling op de grens van ritueel, apocalyps en carnaval.

De drie dansers, performers van verschillende generaties, vertolken hun plaats in die wankele wereld met onsamenhangende, afgebroken bewegingen terwijl het decor rond hen instort.

As in the first two parts of her trilogy — JEZEBEL and D̶A̶R̶K̶MATTER — Menzo uses distortion and transformation as signature elements in FRANK, the monstrous and horror, the 3rd part of a speculative fabulated trilogy.

Menzo doesn’t tell linear stories; instead, she creates spaces and worlds in which the Black body takes center stage, exploring narratives rooted in the African diaspora. In her solo performance JEZEBEL, she deconstructed the image of women in hip-hop culture. In D̶A̶R̶K̶MATTER, she sought ways to untether the body from reality, inspired by colliding black holes and dark matter.

FRANK — referencing both the English word for honesty and Frankenstein’s monster — delves into the monstrous in all its forms, especially as a shared fantasy: the non-human, the deviation from the norm, the Other. Zombies, demons, ghosts, dangerous animals — they all mirror our fear of the unknown. FRANK unfolds at the intersection of ritual, apocalypse, and carnival.

Three dancers — performers from different generations — navigate this unstable world through fragmented, broken movements, as the set slowly collapses around them.
