De Leesclub

De Leesclub is een groep van theatermakers, acteurs, schrijvers en regisseurs die regelmatig samen toneelteksten lezen. Teksten worden voorgelezen met een drankje in de hand. De teksten kunnen afkomstig zijn van gearriveerde schrijvers, jonge auteurs, vertalingen van internationale teksten of zelfs work in progress. Iedereen kan meelezen en luisteren. De teksten die worden gelezen zijn gerelateerd aan Shakespeare is Dead. Wees welkom bij de club en lees met ons mee

Over de schrijver
Si'an Chen is schrijver, theaterauteur, regisseur, dichter en literair vertaalster. Ze is geboren in Binnen-Mongolië (China) en leeft en werkt in Beijing (Peking). Ze heeft zes stukken op haar naam staan waaronder het door Jeremy Tiang vertaalde "Underpass". Ze heeft korte verhalencollecties gepubliceerd zoals “Flame in the Body”, “Live Food”, “Fake Life”, “Next, I Ask, You Answer. Ze schreef dramastukken zoals “Dream of Mortals”, “In the Wilderniss”, “Life in a Counterfeit, and regisseerde verschillende van deze stukken. Ze won de derde Zhongshan Star Young Writer of the Year Award and de 12e Shanghai Literature Short Story award. Theaterstukken geschreven en geregisseerd door haar zijn opgevoerd in het Royal Court Theatre, Edinburgh International Theater Festival, Shanghai Drama Art Center, China National Theater, Beijing International Youth Theater Festival en City Theater Festival.

In de diepte van een ondergrondse metro in Beijing worstelt een dakloze moeder om haar kind te beschermen. Een verontrustend panorama van de verborgen onderkant van een stad, dat urgente vragen stelt over de waarde van mensenlevens in de stedelijke jungle.

About the author
Chelsea Woolley is a Toronto playwright, interested in work that is large, rhythmic, and women-centric. Her play, Enormity, Girl, and the Earthquake in Her Lungs started development in 2017 as a part of Nightwood Theatre's Write from the Hip program. She has produced work nationally and internationally including a tour of her piece, The Mountain with Geordie Theatre. She has presented work in Belgium at the Shakespeare is Dead Festival, and at the Kennedy Centre in Washington D.C.. She is the creator of the Mixed-Arts Performance Partnership Program connecting young artists living in precarity with professional artist mentorship, and the Head of Drama with the Canadian Children’s Opera Company. Chelsea is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada’s Playwriting Program. Her newest play, Paint Me This House of Love will premiere at the Tarragon Theatre. 

About the piece  - Enormity, Girl, and the Earthquake in her Lungs
The play takes place during the eight minutes a girl or woman has to wait alone in a crisis center. The characters are the voices and different personalities within herself. Female gaze? Present!!!
Vic has arrived in a women’s shelter. She has been told to make the bed and begin an intake. Make the bed, and speak. Yet sharing her story is an intolerable enormity for a brain in crisis. Vic and the six personified parts of her traumatized brain, struggle to confront what has happened to them, and commit to the refuge offered from a system often designed to remove a victim’s personal agency over her legal, medical, psychological, and economic choices.
