Free to be Free is speciaal ontwikkeld in het kader van het Herdenkingsjaar, waarin 150 jaar afschaffing van slavernij in Nederland en haar (voormalige) koloniën wordt herdacht. Na succesvolle optredens in Amersfoort, Deventer en Utrecht wordt de voorstelling doorontwikkeld waarbij Amsterdamse verhalen centraal komen te staan.

De doorwerking van het koloniaal verleden is voor velen nog steeds voelbaar. Veel mensen hebben dagelijks te maken met institutioneel racisme en van reparaties is nog geen sprake. Zolang racisme en uitsluiting, voortkomend uit het koloniale denken en het slavernijverleden, niet structureel worden aangepakt, stelt Sites of Memory de vraag: vrijheid voor wie? 

Wat hebben de vrijheidsstrijders uit het verleden ons te vertellen? En zij die zich vandaag de dag hard maken voor vrijheid? Wat weten we van onderdrukking en het verzet ertegen? In Free to be Free nemen we het publiek mee langs de verhalen en plekken die verbonden zijn aan de koloniale geschiedenis in Amsterdam, van plantage-eigenaren tot abolitionisten. Aan de hand van dans, theater, poëzie en muziek komen verhalen tot leven. Naast Amsterdam wordt de voorstelling in augustus 2024 nog opgevoerd in Willemstad, Curaçao.

Toegankelijkheid

Ben je niet goed ter been of heb je een stoel nodig voor de buitenlocaties? Neem contact met Sites of Memory op via info@sitesofmemory.nl, zodat ze je kunnen assisteren. Helaas is de voorstelling niet geschikt voor rolstoelgebruikers - veel van de oude trapjes in en rond deze gebouwen zijn niet rolstoelvriendelijk.

Inleidingen

Voorafgaand aan de voorstellingen op donderdag 27 juni zijn er speciale inleidingen. Daar zullen Sites of Memory co-directeurs Jennifer Tosch, Katy Streek en n.t.b. sprekers aanwezig zijn om extra context te geven aan de voorstelling. Deze zullen plaatsvinden om 16:45 en 19:45 uur. Iedereen met een kaartje voor de voorstelling van die dag is daar welkom.

How free are you to be free? The answer to this question can be different for everyone.

Free to be Free is Sites of Memory's latest site-specific performance about freedom and resistance. After successful performances in Amersfoort, Deventer, and Utrecht, the performance will be on view in Amsterdam between 25 and 29 June. The audience will be taken on a theatrical route through the heart of Amsterdam, starting at the Waalse Kerk and ending at the Bushuis (Oost-Indisch Huis).

Free to be Free was developed especially for the Memorial Year, which commemorates 150 years of abolition of slavery in the Netherlands and its (former) colonies. The effects of this past are still felt by many. Many people have to deal with institutional racism and reparations are not yet a reality. As long as racism and exclusion resulting from colonial thinking and the history of slavery are not structurally addressed, Sites of Memory asks the question: freedom for whom?

What do the freedom fighters of the past have to tell us? And those who are fighting for freedom today? What do we know about oppression and resistance to it?

In Free to be Free, we take the audience along the stories and places associated with colonial history in Amsterdam, from the lives of plantation owners to abolitionists. Through dance, theater, poetry, and music, stories come to life. After this last edition in the Netherlands, the grand finale of Free to be Free will take place in Willemstad, Curaçao, in August 2024.
