Op donderdag 30 november 2023 komt het brede culturele veld voor de derde keer bijeen tijdens A Day at the circus, een dag voor professionals. De dag, georganiseerd door Circuspunt & TENT in Theater Bellevue, staat dit jaar in het teken van de gezamenlijke kracht en duurzaamheid van het culturele veld, en van circus in het bijzonder. Aan de hand van keynotes, panelgesprekken en performances brengen we kunde en kennis samen. Waar programmeurs, makers, marketeers, technici, producenten, journalisten en overige circusprofessionals elkaar ontmoeten, wordt de basis gelegd voor een bloeiend en toekomstbestendig circus in Nederland.

GEZAMENLIJKE KRACHT 
Parade maken was in het verleden de manier voor een circusgezelschap om zich te verzekeren van een speelplek en publiek in een dorp. Nu is circusprogrammering al lang niet meer voorbehouden aan het gezelschap, maar het resultaat van een subtiele belangendriehoek tussen artiest, programmeur en in toenemende mate ook die van een agent. Met keynotes en panelgesprekken belichten we deze driehoek, brengen we gezamenlijke belangen bij circusprogrammering naar voren en onderzoeken we hoe artiest, programmeur en agent elkaar in de toekomst steeds vaker kunnen vinden.

DUURZAAMHEID
De culturele sector moet vergroenen. Hoewel harde duurzaamheidseisen voor komende subsidieperiode wellicht nog uitblijven, denken steeds meer gezelschappen na over een verduurzaming. Maar even vaak ontbreekt het hen aan kennis en financiële middelen. Tijdens A Day at the circus komen duurzaamheidsexperts en ervaringsdeskundigen aan het woord en wordt er tijdens workshops gewerkt aan de eerste concrete stappen voor duurzamer produceren.

A Day at the circus wordt georganiseerd door TENT en Circuspunt. Circuspunt is het platform voor het (verenigde) Nederlandse circusveld. Het ondersteunt en stimuleert de algehele ontwikkeling van de circussector en vertegenwoordigt de circusbelangen naar partijen buiten de circuswereld. TENT is het huis voor hedendaags circus van Nederlandse bodem. Sinds de oprichting in 2010 ondersteunen ze makers in verschillende stadia van hun artistieke ontwikkeling en maakproces. Hiermee investeren zij in een kwalitatief hoogwaardig en divers circusaanbod in Nederland. 

Een ticket kost €50,-. Dit is inclusief een uitgebreide lunch in Theatercafé De Smoeshaan.

10:00      Inloop & koffie
10:30      Opening door de host (Maaike Muis), Circuspunt (Marc Eysink Smeets), TENT (Lieke Hillebrand) en Theater Bellevue (Eve Hopkins).
11:00      Keynotes van Daan Stigter (duurzaamheidsmanager bij Jakop Ahlbom Company en Into the Great Wide Open) en Marjorie Boston (programmeur, De Schuur) en Circusbende presenteert hun hernieuwbare energie-installatie.
12:00      Lunch De Smoeshaan
14:00      Workshop over duurzaamheid o.l.v. Daan Stigter en een panelgesprek over het gezamenlijk belang van programmeren van circus met Kim-Jomi Alstadsæter (circus- en dansmaker, Marta & Kim), Ellen Blom (vanuit haar ervaring als agent) en Luuk Adema (programmeur Schouwburg Utrecht).
15:45      Koffie Pauze
16:00      Gezamenlijke afsluiting met onder meer spoken word van de Amsterdamse woordkunstenaar Luan Buleshkaj.
16:45    Borrel tot 17:30

En ook nog: jongleur en bewegingskunstenaar Liza van Brakel viert haar liefde voor de fiets en het duurzame, nomadische circusleven met een kort fragment uit GALOP. Harvey Cobb brengt een fragment uit Barefoot vol Stand-Up en Circus.

On Thursday November 30, 2023, the large cultural field will gather for the third time during A Day at the circus, a day for professionals. This year, the day, organized by TENT & Circuspunt in Theater Bellevue, will focus on the joint strength and sustainability of the cultural field, and circus. Through keynotes, panel discussions and performances, we will bring together skills and knowledge. Where programmers, makers, marketers, technicians, producers, journalists, and circus professionals meet, the foundations are established for a flourishing and future-proof circus in the Netherlands. 

JOINT FORCE 
Parade making was in the past the way for a circus company to secure a performance site and audience in a village. Now, circus programming is no longer the exclusive concern of the company, but the result of a subtle triangle of interests between artist, programmer and, increasingly, that of an agent. With keynotes and panel discussions, we highlight this subtle triangle, bring out shared interests in circus programming and explore how artist, programmer and agent can find each other even more often.

SUSTAINABILITY
The cultural sector needs to go green. Although hard sustainability requirements for upcoming subsidy periods may still be out of the question, more and more companies are thinking about becoming more sustainable. But just as often, they lack knowledge and financial resources. During A Day at the circus, sustainability experts or experts by experience will speak and we will work on the first concrete steps for more sustainable production.

A Day at the circus is organized by TENT and Circuspunt. Circuspunt is the platform for the (united) Dutch circus field. It supports and stimulates the overall development of the circus sector and represents circus interests to parties outside the circus world. TENT is the house for contemporary circus from Dutch soil. Since its foundation in 2010, they support makers in different stages of their artistic development and creative process. With this, they invest in a high-quality and diverse circus production in the Netherlands.

A ticket costs €50. This includes an extensive lunch at Thetatercafé De Smoeshaan.

10:30 Opening by the host (Maaike Muis), Circuspunt (Marc Eysink Smeets), TENT (Lieke Hillebrand) and Theater Bellevue (Eve Hopkins).
11:00 Keynotes by Daan Stigter (sustainability manager at Jakop Ahlbom Company and Into the Great Wide Open) and Marjorie Boston (programmer, De Schuur) and Circusbende presents their renewable energy installation.
12:00 Lunch De Smoeshaan
14:00 Workshop on sustainability led by Daan Stigter and a panel discussion on the common interest of programming circus including Kim-Jomi Alstadsæter (circus- en dansmaker, Marta & Kim), Ellen Blom (from her experience as an agent) and a programmer.
15:45 Coffee Break
16:00 Joint closure including spoken word by Amsterdam-based word artist Luan Buleshkaj.
16:45 Drinks until 17:30

Also: juggler and movement artist Liza van Brakel celebrates her love for the bicycle and the sustainable, nomadic circus life with a short excerpt from GALOP. Harvey Cobb performs an excerpt from Barefoot full of Stand-Up and Circus.
