Cairo voelt zich beperkt door de standaardbenadering van diversiteits- en inclusie werk en doorbreekt de grenzen. Academisch is dit gebaseerd op indigenous knowledge, de blues-esthetiek, Holy hiphop en Caribische en zwarte feministische theorieën. Ze gebruikt haar Afro-Surinaamse en Native American tradities, haar academische training en kunst achtergrond om haar visie te verspreiden. Door persoonlijke verhalen te gebruiken, nodigt ze haar publiek uit om deel te nemen, te verkennen en na te denken met als uiteindelijk doel om gezamenlijk een nieuw verhaal te creëren.

With the presentation of her book Holding Space Aminata Cairo takes you on a journey of words, music, dance and ceremony to the stories that connect us in our humanity. Feeling limited by the standard approach in diversity and inclusion work, Cairo breaks through the boundaries. She uses her Afro-Surinamese and Native traditions, and her academic and arts training to spread her vision. By using personal stories she invites her audience to engage, explore and reflect with the final goal of creating a new story collectively.

Meer over de makers
Dr. Aminata Cairo is antropoloog, psycholoog, opvoeder, “love-worker” en voormalig lector (onderzoeksprofessor) Inclusief Onderwijs . In deze functie was zij de eerste en enige onderzoekshoogleraar van Afrikaanse afkomst in Nederland. Thans is zij lector Sociale Rechtvaardigheid en Diversiteit in de Kunsten aan de Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (AHK).
Hiernaast is ze een veelgevraagd spreker en adviseur op het gebied van diversiteit en inclusie. Voor haar inspanningen ontving ze in 2013 de Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award aan de Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. In 2016 ontving ze de Ere-Orde van de Palm, een staatsonderscheiding van de regering van Suriname voor haar bijdrage aan de cultuur.
Ze is een moeder, dochter, zus en Lyman T. Johnson Scholar. Haar werk is altijd gebaseerd op de spirituele en culturele tradities van haar Native American peetmoeder en haar Surinaamse afkomst.
About Aminata
Dr. Aminata Cairo is an anthropologist, psychologist, educator, “people – worker”, and former lector (research professor) of Inclusive Education and lector Social Justice and Diversity in the Arts of the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) In that position she was the first and only research professor of African descent in the Netherlands. Since then she has become a sought after speaker and consultant on diversity and inclusion issues. She received the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2013 for her efforts. In 2016 she received the Honorary Order of the Palm, a state decoration by the Government of Suriname for her contribution to culture. She is a mother, daughter, sister and Lyman T. Johnson Scholar. Her work is always grounded in the spiritual and cultural traditions of her Native American godmother and her Surinamese heritage.
