Niks Nieuws. Over mijn coming-out als optimist

Monki is een optimist en dat wil hij niet meer onder stoelen of banken steken. Uit de kast komen blijkt een opdracht vol twijfels en valkuilen. “Dat is niet hoe de wereld werkt” zegt men, maar hij ziet toch dat het kan! Ook al lijken de anderen soms luider. In deze intieme en fysieke voorstelling met theater, livemuziek en circus krijgen de moodswings de overhand: van klein en ingetogen tot opzwepend up-beat, groots of eenzaam. Optimist Monki krijgt het steeds moeilijker om zijn idealen hoog te houden, want een positief verhaal is eigenlijk best radicaal.

Niks Nieuws. Over mijn coming-out als optimist is de tweede voorstelling uit een drieluik over optimisme van Monki, huismaker van TENT (2021-2024). In en om de palen laat hij ons nadenken over ons negatieve wereldbeeld, de effecten van conventionele nieuwsmedia of onze algemeen heersende blik op de mens. Niet dat hij de slechte kanten van de mens wil verdoezelen, maar hij wil het positieve benoemen om het negatieve aan te pakken. Zo creëert theatermaker Monki de mogelijkheid om elkaar een verhaal te vertellen dat wel eens het verschil zou kunnen maken. Andere voorstellingen uit het drieluik zijn 60% Banaan: een blijde boodschap voor de boze burger (2022). In de vorm van een acrobatische lezing en een feestje met het publiek toont hij aan dat het beter gaat met de wereld dan we denken. Ook Apen vallen uit bomen, het derde luik, wordt verwacht in 2024.

Na afloop gaat Bas van Rijnsoever, dramaturg van de voorstelling, in gesprek met het publiek, maker Benjamin Kuitenbrouwer en regisseur Anouke de Groot. Er wordt hierbij rekening gehouden met bezoeker die vervolgens nog naar de Late Night Show Hold on light gaan kijken.

Swinging between four poles, acrobat Monki welcomes us. He wants to tell us something. He is optimistic. He is an optimist, and he doesn't want to hide that anymore. Coming out of the closet turns out to be a task full of doubts and pitfalls. "That's not how the world works" people say, but he nevertheless sees that it can be done! Even if the others seem louder at times. In this intimate and physical performance with theatre, live music, and circus, the moodswings take over: from small and subdued to rousing up-beat, grand or lonely. Optimist Monki finds it increasingly difficult to uphold his ideals, because a positive story is quite radical.

Nothing New. About my coming-out as an optimist is the second performance from a triptych on optimism by Monki, house maker of TENT (2021-2024). In and around the poles, he makes us reflect on our negative worldview, the effects of conventional news media or our generally prevailing view of human beings. Not that he wants to gloss over the bad sides of man, but he wants to name the positive to address the negative. In this way, theatre-maker Monki creates the opportunity to tell each other a story that could well make a difference. Other performances from the triptych include 60% Banana: a cheerful message for angry citizens (2022). In the form of an acrobatic lecture and party with the audience, he demonstrates that the world is a better place than we think. Monkeys also fall from trees, the third part, is expected in 2024.
